Famed since ancient times as the home of Odysseus, the island of Ithaca lies off the northeast coast of Kefalonia. It may be just a short boat trip away but to visit is like stepping back in time. Its rugged and mountainous terrain seems straight out of an ancient classic. Dmitri, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The legend of Odysseus on the island of Ithaca is a classic tale of adventure, heroism and perseverance in the face of adversity. It's been told and retold throughout the centuries and remains a beloved part of ancient Greek mythology to this day.'You'll hear many mythical tales as you discover Ithaca. Explore the capital, Vathi, with its fabulous setting and horseshoe harbour under the island's highest mountain – Nirito. Next, go by boat to Kioni in the north, passing cliffs and secret beaches – there's a swim stop to cool off, too. Ithaca has largely been overlooked by mass tourism, so you'll see Greece at its purest when you visit Odysseus' Island.Jumping off the boat in Kioni, you'll find yourself in a very appealing little harbour. The main village is built like an amphitheatre on the slopes of the hillside above, flower-bedecked houses overlooking the port below. You'll then head to the even tinier port of Frikes – not much more than a cluster of tavernas at the waterside – where you'll have free time for lunch. And there's a stop in the inland hill village of Stavros with its leafy main square, before sailing back to Kefalonia.

The island itself is lovely, the guide highly recommended where to eat or have coffee. She gave a good precee of The Odyssey and briefly mentioned the artifacts found in the bay from whence Odysseus had apparently sailed. A different guide on a different trip told us more about the history of that bay.

Leuk: ferry, busreis naar Vathu, tijd voor koffie in Vathu (eigelijk te lang)., boot/zwemmen (had langer gemogen) Minder: "verplicht eten" in Frikes Port. Niets anders te doen als je iets anders zou willen. "Aanbeveling" van gids is beschamend (provisie?): "bij de ander is ********** vastgesteld". Na een reis van enkele minuten weer een (te lange) in Stavros voor koffie en cake. Samengevat: na de bootreis wordt je uit de bus gegooid om de locale horeca te spekken ??. Obesitasreis!

The trip was fantastic from start to finish. The tour guide, Diamond, had an excellent knowledge of both Kefalonia and Ithaca and her love of the area made the tour more magical. Spiros, our driver, navigated the winding roads superbly. The places visited were stunning and the people very welcoming. A good mix of coach tour, boat trip and walking, with enough free time in each area to make it feel relaxed.

It was brilliant, Diamond our guide was fantastic and it really felt like we had been away no time at all. every stop was lovely and we felt there was enough time to do some exploring and see the areas. The driver as well (I forgot his name) was brilliant and knew every road on the island so much that we had such a smooth journey

Liked the day trip.. The only thing I would say that was wrong .. the guide told everyone to go to a certain restaurant for lunch , saying it was the best food and to avoid the restaurant with the grey seats as you will get food poisoning if you eat there… But the next coach that arrived must have been told to go to the restaurant with the grey seats… would have cut down time if gone to different places to eat.

It was an amazing experience. Enjoyed it all but especially the guide Diamond and the incredible driver (George?). Diamond knew Ithaka and her passion shone through - best guide I have ever come across - knowledgable and with a sense of humour. The scenery was jaw dropping. Highly recommended.

We loved it all! It was a long day (13 hours) with an early start (06:30)! The driver and guide (Eleni) were both excellent. The time in each place was perfect. Having ‘noodles’ on the boat for poorer swimmers was brilliant. The boat trip was generally excellent. All great!

Disappointed with our trip to Ithaca, bus journey was ok guide went on to much about Odysseus for to long at least for us also the reason we booked trip was we wanted to visit Kioni ,we spent couple of hours in other villages but when we got to Kioni we got off bus followed guide straight on to boat trip with no time whatsoever to take few photos or enjoy short time in kioni would not of booked trip if known this !! In fact hotel rep told us we would visit kioni and even have a swim there!!!

Was sceptical about the time on coach but it was wonderful to see the scenery on the journey. We loved all the stops in the villages and had a lovely lunch in a restaurant in Fiskas recommended by our rep The rep Diamond lived up to her name she was very good informative and funny. Coach driver Spiro was amazing Loved the old fashioned boat and was a bit cramped with amount of people The trip was advertised as 8 hours but it was 11 hours start to finish Would recommend and did to some guests

As an introduction to wonderful Ithaca it was excellent. Guide was clear and helpful sharing her knowledge and love of the island. The only downside was leaving! Left there though with a great desire to return for a much longer stay.

Too many stops in places without interest or specific historical information. Would be better to have less stops and more info all a bit hurried. Such a beautiful island deserved to be given a more relaxed visit rather than covering as much of the island. Appreciate that some may prefer having covered all the island, however that spoilt it for me. Less is more.

Liked we had good amounts of time to explore, eat and take in the sights without being on the bus all day. Good bus driver and very knowledgeable and interesting guide who helped us make the best of the day. Would definitely do this tour again!

I found the courier seemed rather bored as she said she liked the island as she goes there a lot but she looked as though she was nodding off on the coach. She went through the Greek history rather quickly seems she does the same speech every trip. Stops in villages mainly for lunch and ice cream but not much else to see. Boat trip around bay was good as was the swimming in bay, but a lot of money for such a long day.

The trip was very well organised. Diamond the guide was very good and full of information. Coach driver excellent especially navigating the narrow roads on Ithaca. Felt that the swim stop was only there to fill in time. Boat trip was ok apart from one crew member who insisted on blocking my view. Also he was constantly talking on his mobile phone the whole trip.

Enjoy the full day, the coach drive down to the port was excellent, the ferry crossing good, the information from the guide was first class a very knowledgeable people who certainly give us a lot of history of the island. Boat trip very good. Choice of restaurant was also good best calamari I have had.as for the Island it was just beautiful.

Our guide was excellent - very personable and knowledgable. Our driver was also very good, and did an amazing job of driving the coach on small mountainous roads. The island itself is very beautiful and we had penty of free time to do our own thing.

By far the best a Tui tour we have had. An amazing experience on a mythical island with story telling, hospitality and history! Diamond our guide and Spyros our driver were knowledgeable and experienced. Plenty of time to explore and enjoy each village and great transport networks too. Odysseus would have been proud!!

Tui,s staff at the beginning at the airport were very helpful as for the first time we missed our flight due to a number of circumstances, Mary and Sarah Jane at the check in were very professional and I think the company should give some sort of recognition to them as we will come back to tui next year. You got a lot for your money, ferry, villages, and swim stop boat trip, which we enjoyed! I don’t think I would have gone in the sea without the noodle floats so do keep those. I think when walking around Vathi it would be nice if you had a small map to give out or an optional walking tour.

The guide was fantastic and so knowledgable about the island and the individual places that we stopped to see. The location is beautiful and the restaurants we visited had the most amazing food. This is probably the b3t trip my wife and I have ever been on. Ithaca is a magical place with such an interesting history.

Fantastic day on a beautiful island, the best day on the holiday. The only negative was the last stop in the village where we had the local cake. I am not sure what we got out of this stop, when I feel it could’ve been spent elsewhere. The guide was very helpful and knowledgeable and was very enthusiastic about Ithica

Loved this trip, small boat excursion with chance to swim was particularly great. Small villages were charming, picturesque and unspoilt. Not sure there was a need for the Stavros stop though. Guide and driver, excellent!
