This snapshot of Dominican life beyond the Coconut Coast has all the makings for a great day out. A sugarcane plantation and a cigar-rolling demonstration are just some of the highlights. But the star turn of the day has got to be lunch in a local family's home. As Ramon, one of our local guides, says, ‘I'm always proud to show off my heritage through our food. Like the island itself, Dominican cuisine has been influenced by Taino, Spanish and African flavours. There's even a hint of the Middle East in some dishes. You'll see, smell and taste a whole new side to our country.'We kick off early, with a trip to Higuey to see the famous Altagracia Basilica – a pilgrimage site because of its miraculous image of Our Lady. Then, make sure to have your camera at the ready as we take a scenic drive through rustic villages, on our way to the next stop – a coconut oil producer. You'll also visit a sugarcane plantation for a rum tasting session and watch a cigar-rolling demonstration with a master of his craft.After such a busy morning, you'll be ready for your lunch. Greeted by a Dominican family, you'll be welcomed into their home for a feast of typical dishes made with locally sourced produce. You'll also get to see the family's farm and coffee plantation, and taste freshly grown cocoa and fruit. We'll round the day of exploration with some time to relax in natural surroundings and maybe enjoy a swim.

Het bezoeken van de lokale productie sites vond ik geweldig. Alles werd tot in detail uitgelegd, je kon alles proeven en als je wou de lokale producten ook aankopen En alles kan met de bankkaart betaald worden dus geen onnodige cash mee te zeilen. Dat was voor mij althans het hoogtepunt ook al was het bezoek aan de basiliek in Higuey en het openbare strand ook mee genomen. Een echte aanrader.

Le transport n'était pas très confortable surtout pour une longue distance comme celle-ci. Noua avions eu le shuttle... Nous n'avons pas eu assez de temps à la basilique Altagracia et aussi a la plage. Plus de temps pour les deux endroits seraient bienvenus. Sinon, nous avons apprécié le guide et les autres activités. Nous avons passé une merveilleuse journée!

Did we enjoy the trip- yes Was it what we were expecting- no It was essentially a glorified shopping trip finishing of with 30 minutes on a beach where you were still hounded by market sellers. The guide & driver were lovely and made the trip. Apart from the cathedral the whole thing was a sales pitch. That being said it was nice to get out and see the local countryside & meet locals. It wasn’t lunch in a ‘family home’ it was lunch at an adventure park with stunning surroundings.

I am.not have this was not what I wanted booking I paid for the full day experience and we did not go to macao beach It's only reason I booked it The bus was dangerous Seat belts were joke The guide started to bore us going on and on No lunch in local.home it was in a bug hall thing Feel we were forced into buying things and the chocolate I tasted was not the one u bought I am so disappointed I never got macao beach

The time on the truck in between stops were long. We were only served one drink all the time on the truck all day. The guide was only there to try and get us to buy things that he showed us. It was not worth the £75 per person. Very poor excursion by TUI

It took over 1 hour for us to get on our way after being picked up from hotel. It took too long picking up others from other hotels, and then we had a long wait at a gas station waiting for a different bus to arrive and we had to change busses. A similar thing happened at the end of our tour day, where it took over an hour to drop everyone off. Over two hours of our ‘tour’ involved just locking up and dropping off guests. I would never recommend this company again.

Ondanks het slechte weer hebben we (mijn vriendin en ik) super genoten. We hebben veel gezien in het tijdsbestek en alles was goed georganiseerd. Daarbij heeft onze gids (Santiago) veel verteld over het land en had hij op alle vragen een goed antwoord. Eten was prima geregeld en drinken was er genoeg

Notre guide Emilio très compétent. Ce qui est très bien, c'est que l'on voit la vie des habitants de l'île. Visite chez Maria très intéressante pour la fabrique du cacao et du café. Repas de midi moyen.

The tour guide who called himself sexy pappy was fun and had a great sense of humor and knowledge of the sight seeing offerings. He promotes his country well, which I like to see and also explained the issues that the country faces. The buses were uncomfortable, the beach was not necessary and time would have been spent better exploring another aspect of the country's culture. Maybe the palace or other historical site as the beach is what most people on the tour were going back to.

Mooie dagtour, niet te lang. Om half 8 weg, rond 16 uur weer terug bij resort. Kundige chauffer ( Henry ) en reisleider ( George, spreekt 5 talen, respect ), super kerels, die maakten het verschil. Genoten en veel gelachen.

We enjoyed the day overall but the tour was not as described. There was no mention of ‘safari’ so we were shocked when an open sided lorry turned up. I could not do up the seat belt on the narrow seats. We had multiple stops where after a short talk about chocolate, coconut oil and other products there was then a lot more time while they tried to sell us stuff. As for the local lunch in a family home, the lunch was fine but in a huge restaurant seemingly owned by the adventure tour company.

Enjoyed the day, but was a bit mislead by the TUI Rep who said we would go to a local market, but that was never on the itinerary. Also, we were expecting to go to an actual house with a local family for lunch, not an open barn with staff catering for around 50 tourists. The food didn't seem particularly local cuisine.

All tours are very expensive..bottle of beer on beach of tour 15 American dollars. We have booked another tour for next week so we have now spent £500 on trips that is 2 trips for 2 people.Now running out of spending money. The reps including the tui reps are all very friendly a d helpful .

Our guide Oswaldo was brilliant, engaging & coped well with the mixed nationalities in our group. Our driver Hector was pleasant & an excellent driver. The tour itself was a lot of fun & very interesting. The only disappointment was the lunch which was not held in a traditional Dominican Home but in the catering area of the tour company’s base. we were led to believe it was a TUI exclusive however, it was obviously run by “Runners adventures” & the itinerary was different to TUI literature.

I liked seeing the villages and towns on the way to Higuay and especially the basilica. Only a short time there but it was enough. Guide and driver were very professional and friendly. Lots of interesting information. Not sure the beach visit was necessary. It was lovely and I walked along it but many others just sat at a table - possibly too tired by this point.

Good choice of places visited, except the beach. Driver and guide were marvellous. Very informative and entertaining guide. Interesting places visited. Good opportunity to buy directly from the providers of oils/spices/lotions and cigars, if wanted and after tasting and trying them. No hard sell just up to you. Lunch was good and provided for non meat eaters. Beach was a waste. Too crowded and not enough time even if you wanted to stay.

An informative tour - Picked up in open back wagon with lap belts that needed replacement as they were ineffective. The guide was good in talking in three languages however repeated several of the processes over and over at each stage of the trip and wondered why we knew what he was saying. The river trip was not really explained and seemed pointless. “Hey take a seat on this platform, they done some filming down here” 30 mins later we left the platform/boat. No explanation at the coco factory….

WOW what a fabulous experience from start to finish. The guide Angel was so knowledgeable, informative & a lovely person. Freddie the driver was fab It was eye opening & sad to see how the locals live outside of the complexes but inspiring to hear of their perseverance to "make ends meet" & that a percentage of the fee from this excursion goes towards building schools & providing an education. The saying goes "every day is a school day" & this excursion embodies this ethos, a trip not to miss

Huge language barrier when being picked up. Due to the driver's accent it would have been helpful if the driver would have had my name displayed on a piece of paper as the name he was calling did not sound like mine. He finally showed me a list with my name on it. He also kept saying Safari which I did not understand to be the trip I signed up for because I did not know what Safari meant in Spanish.

Overall a very good tour, the guide was very informative and friendly and was very knowledgeable about any culture and places of interest. Driver was very friendly and helpful. We were a bit disappointed with the lunch, not what we were expecting and also the lack of drinks offered, otherwise a very good day out.

Staff were excellent, Sammy very knowledgeable and fun. The trip content was much more than expected (e.g...'visit to typical house' was much more than that, withe explanations of plants and products and opportunity to buy) More beach time at the end of a busy day would be better... We expected downtime to relax, but was only 25 mins on a really lovely beach too.

The trip was very good. Very informative when we visited the cigar and chocolate making in the jungle. Lunch was very nice. We were offered lots of drinks throughout the day. Was picked up.from.our hotel at 8am and back by 4pm. Spent about 30.mins at the beach at the end of the tour, so not enough time to go into the sea. Would definitely recommend

A very enjoyable tour to see some highlights of Dom Rep and local people, villages and "industry". I didn't understand why the price of the tour was more that the lowest "From" price on your app. No need for "variable" pricing for things like this...

More time in the basillica would have been nice as felt very dashed. Beach was disappointing. Went to two places that sold very similar products, we made our purchases at the first as was unaware that the lunch stop would also have products on sale so they were at a huge disadvantage. Poor detailing of trip itinerary.

Jose unser Tourguide und der Fahrer waren super. wir haben viel über Land und Leute erfahren. Die Landschaft war mehr als beeindruckend. Wermutstropfen waren allerdings die unserer Ansicht nach völlig überhöhten Preise von Rum, Zigarren, Kaffee, Kakao. Das gibt’s sogar im Hotel billiger, oder noch besser im Supermarkt. Mit den aufgerufenen Preisen wird die Landbevölkerung sicher nicht unterstützt. Echt Schade.

Pickup was on time the tour guide was a man called Angel, very funny and his knowledge was excellent and the driver was called Maximus he also was excellent always giving out cold drinks and helping any way he could both of them made the day a really good experience of the local culture and trip to remember

Start mit einer "Flusskreuzfahrt". Dann ging es zur Schokoladen-Manufaktur, hier hätte man mehr erwartet, nicht nur den Verkauf. Auf der Zuckerrohrplantage erfolgte eine Zuckerrohr-Verkostung & ein kleines "Rum-Cola-Tasting". Dann ging es zur Zigarren-Herstellung. Toll war, dass ich meine eigene Zigarre mit drehen konnte (weiß allerdings nicht, ob dies für alle möglich ist). Zum Schluss der Besuch der Kiche. Die Fahrt im "Safari-Bus" ist eine Erfahrung wert. Alles in Allem eine sehenswerte Tour.

Driver, Rafael and tour guide Angel, did an excellent job of providing lots of interesting facts about the Dominican culture and way of life. Really fantastic and friendly people with a very nice home cooked meal provided at the family plantation. Well worth a visit.

Alles war super organisiert und die gesamte Tour war sehr abwechslungsreich. Besonders der Guide José wusste viel über Land und Leute zu erzählen (in einem guten Deutsch) und machte so den Ausflug perfekt. Unser Fahrer brachte uns sicher von Station zu Station und war sehr hilfsbereit. Natürlich konnte auch das Eine oder Andere erworben werden, aber ohne aufdringliche Verkaufsschau. Wer mehr über das Land abseits der Stände erfahren möchte, ist mit diesem Angebot bestens beraten.

We thought lunch could have been better, time at the beach was too short . Overall though it was very interesting , good to get out and about the area , and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The tour and everything was great - and the highlight was definitely the lunch. However, some of the visits to other sites felt a bit forced, like shopping stops at the coconut oil place where we weren't really shown how it's made, just had the chance to buy it although I will note that we were not being pushed or anything. The stop just felt a little bit pointless. Also the visit to the church was way too quick, would have loved more time here and on the Macao beach.

This was a very good trip which gives you an insight on the typical everyday life in Dominican Republic. Our guide Santiago was very knowledgeable and took his time explaining everything. Our driver Garry was very good too. The lunch was a let down. I was expecting a more authentic lunch like plantain, mangoes etc. I was expecting fried chicken and bean sauce which wasn’t very rich. Overall this was an amazing trip. There was wine testing, coffe tasting and cocoa testing plus the drinks

On some parts of the trip we couldn't hear the guide. He was talking at one end of the bus and all we could hear was the engine. He didn't always wait for us all to be in ear shot before he started talking. The coconut factory was not operational so we didn't see the process. We couldn't enter the church because an event was going on. This was known before by the guide when the trip was bought but not told to us.

De tour met safari bus was geweldig. Door plaatselijke dorpjes. De moeite om te zien. De coconutoil stop was maar pover. Niet zo interessant. De basiliek is een leuke stop. Dan de suikerriet was ookmaar pover. Rum tasting was in een shop. Sigaren rollen was eens de moeite om te zien. 4x4 tour stond vermeld maar niet gedaan. Wel voor betaald. Macao beach is super mooi. Enkel de verkopers ter plaatse zijn redelijk agressief. Dus oppassen.

We were told the trip included both alcoholic and soft drinks We only received water and one rum and coke (very poor value for money) One of the highlights of the tour was to go inside the Basilica however due to some festivities we weren’t allowed in, this should have been explained prior to booking the trip Following pick up we were transferred to another truck to save time however on the return trip this didn’t happen and we waisted time going in the wrong direction to drop other guests off

The whole day was fantastic! Absolutely amazing! Our guide Sammy was great. He was informative, highly knowledgeable, clearly loves his job and made the whole day fun from beginning to end. We felt safe, secure and relaxed. Thanks to Sammy for the tips on coconut oil! -It’s worked wonders on my feet!

A really great day out, however the TUI rep told us we'd visit a flee market, we didn't. I asked the tour guide (who was excellent), he told me the flee market was the few sellers on the beach. My son had looked forward to the market all day, and unfortunately that spoilt the trip for him.

Visite fabrique cigars et canne à sucre ********** artificiels. On s attendait à visiter une vraie fabrique à cigars. Canne à sucre : très superficiel. Le passage sur la plage Macao n est pas pertinent dans cette excursion.
